Older houses have character but their electrics don’t always keep up. If your place is showing its age, these are the issues we see most often and how we sort them out.
1. Outdated wiring
Wiring from decades ago wasn’t designed for all the gadgets and appliances we use today.
Symptoms: frequent blown fuses, flickering lights or overloaded sockets.
Our fix: we assess whether a partial or full rewire is needed, explain the best option, then carry out the work to modern standards so your electrics can cope with today’s appliances.
2. Not enough or tired sockets
Older homes often have way fewer sockets than you need or the ones you’ve got are worn out.
Our fix: add extra sockets in sensible locations, replace old ones and put them on their own circuits where needed.
3. Old fuse boxes
Some homes still have old style fuse boxes, which aren’t as safe or reliable as modern consumer units. This can cause frequent trips and sometimes there’s no RCD protection.
Our fix: upgrade to a modern consumer unit with RCDs and proper circuit protection. It reduces nuisance trips and keeps the house safer.
4. Poor lighting setups
Switches that don’t work properly or rooms that are never bright enough could be old wiring or outdated circuits.
Our fix: rewire lighting circuits where needed, replace fittings, and install LED or smart lighting if you want more control and lower running costs.
5. Bad earthing / grounding
Older properties sometimes have poor grounding, which can affect appliance safety.
Symptoms: appliances tripping, odd shocks or failed safety tests.
Our fix: test the earthing properly, make repairs or upgrades to the earth connection and re-test so everything meets safety regs.
